    Artificial intelligence has definitely changed how we do business, for the better in many ways. Chatbots that reply in seconds, algorithms tracking your behavior so you can instantly get what you want and automation handling routine tasks faster than any human team ever could.

    But just because it’s fast doesn’t mean it feels good.

    Efficiency is great, but I’ve seen too many businesses losing the human element that actually builds trust and loyalty. If your digital experience feels robotic, scripted or cold, people won’t stick around, no matter how “optimized” it is.

    At some point, tech needs a heartbeat behind it. Otherwise, all you’re doing is automating disconnection.

    When automation goes too far

    Yes, automation is powerful. It keeps things running. Chatbots answer questions 24/7, tools auto-schedule content and systems track customer behavior. But let’s not ignore the downside.

    Sure, 51% of consumers prefer interacting with bots over humans when they want immediate service. But what if they don’t? What happens when customers get frustrated from waiting or having to repeat themselves?

    Think about the entire experience. When every interaction feels automated, customers begin to question whether anyone is really paying attention. Bots can’t read the room. They can’t hear tone, detect frustration or understand nuance. So, while automation helps scale, it often kills connection if you rely on it too much.

    Your chatbot can still handle basic questions, but when things get tricky, a handoff to a human rep makes all the difference. Most people aren’t expecting perfection. They’re looking for effort, care and responsiveness. When that’s missing, the tech isn’t helping — it’s hurting.

    Personalization is now a necessity, not a mere desire

    Personalization is now a basic expectation, but it can’t be all AI.

    In 2024, Forbes surveyed over 1,000 U.S. consumers for their State of Customer Service and CX Study and found that 81% of customers prefer companies that offer a personalized experience, and they expect this personal touch across the platforms they use, not just in-store or over email.

    No surprise there — it confirms what we already know about personalization. Customers want fast, relevant and thoughtful service that feels made for them. But here’s where brands get it wrong:

    They use AI to automate “personalization” based on click behavior, email opens or CRM tags — and stop there. The result? Generic messages dressed up in personalization tags. “Hi [FirstName]” isn’t what people mean by thoughtful.

    Yes, AI helps scale insight. But real personalization comes from real-time awareness, in those moments that can’t be predicted. Knowing that a customer just called support five minutes ago changes how you respond to their next email. This isn’t something AI alone can deliver. It takes judgment, context and care.

    Let your team go off-book when it serves the customer. That’s what humanizing your strategy means: efficient, but never robotic. Because personalization shouldn’t feel predictive, it should feel considered. AI might tee it up, but humans close the loop.

    Do what the algorithm can’t

    Speed, data and automation can open the door, but connection keeps people coming back.

    Ask real questions

    The comments section is the closest thing you’ve got to a real-time focus group. It keeps your blind spots in check.

    Ask what your customers are struggling with, what they want to see more of and what’s missing. They’ll tell you when something’s off. If you’re paying attention, you can adjust before it becomes a bigger issue.

    Reward frontline feedback

    Your best insights aren’t in your dashboards. Want to improve a feature? Ask the person fielding complaints about it. Want to write better copy? Talk to the person who knows the objections your customers keep bringing up.

    Build a process where frontline teams can flag patterns, share feedback and influence decisions. When your team sees that their input shapes the brand, they become more invested. And when customers see that their voice actually leads to improvements, they trust you more.

    Lead with your story

    Sprout Social reports that for 86% of consumers, authenticity is a major factor in choosing which brands to support. That’s why storytelling — especially the messy, honest kind — builds trust faster than any email sequence ever could.

    It doesn’t have to be dramatic or polished. Some of the most powerful brand moments come from raw, unscripted content: a phone-shot video, a glimpse of what went wrong behind the scenes, a quick peek at how you build your product.

    The truth is, customers don’t just want to be sold to — they want to be in a relationship with the brands they buy from. Seeing real people doing real work is what turns that relationship from transactional to emotional.

    Are NPS surveys still worth using?


    At Alchemer, we’ve spent decades immersed in customer feedback, helping brands collect it, make sense of it, and take positive action. And people bring up one metric  in just about every conversation, it’s NPS. 

    So, let’s talk about it. What does NPS do well? Where does it fall short? And most importantly: does it still deserve a place in your customer experience strategy? 

    What are NPS surveys? 

    Before diving in, let’s first give a quick refresher on NPS surveys.  

    Fred Reichheld, in collaboration with Bain & Company and Satmetrix, developed the Net Promoter Score (NPS) around a single, powerful question: “How likely are you to recommend this product or service to a friend?”.  

    Customers respond on a scale from 0 to 10. Respondents who answer 9 or 10 are classified as Promoters—loyal enthusiasts likely to spread the word. Respondents who choose 7 or 8 are Passives—satisfied but unenthusiastic customers unlikely to promote or criticize. Anyone rating 6 or below is a Detractor—an unhappy customer who could damage your reputation through negative word-of-mouth. 

    To calculate your NPS, simply subtract the percentage of Detractors from the percentage of Promoters. A score above 75 indicates excellence and offers a quick snapshot of how your customers truly feel about your brand.  

    What NPS surveys are good for 

    Despite its simplicity, NPS has stood the test of time for a reason. When used correctly, it can offer valuable insights and help teams stay connected to the customer experience. Here are a few reasons why NPS still earns a spot in many feedback programs:  

    1. Simplicity 

    NPS is easy to roll out and easy to interpret. It doesn’t take a CX team weeks to analyze, you get an instant read on customer sentiment. That’s why companies across every industry, from airlines to leading SaaS platforms, still include it in their post-purchase or support surveys. 

    2. Real-time signals 

    Because the question is quick to answer, many companies deploy it right after key touchpoints—like after onboarding, a support interaction, or delivery. When responses start trending downward, that can be an early warning sign of a bigger issue. 

    3. Predictive power 

    NPS has been shown to correlate with future loyalty and revenue. Promoters often spend more, churn less, and refer others. For growth-focused teams, knowing where you stand today can help predict performance down the road. 

    4. Benchmarking 

    Because so many companies use NPS, it provides a common measurement tool. You can compare your score to industry averages, track progress over time, or even set internal targets by department or region. 

    Where NPS falls short 

    As helpful as NPS can be, it’s not without its flaws. On its own, a single score doesn’t always tell the full story—or provide the depth needed to drive real improvements. Here are some of the most common limitations teams run into when relying too heavily on NPS. 

    1. Insights often lack context 

    Here’s the catch: NPS tells you how customers feel, but not why. A score of 4 doesn’t explain whether the issue was product performance, pricing, customer service, or all of the above. 

    Unless you pair it with an open-ended follow-up or additional questions, NPS alone leaves teams guessing. 

    Advancements in AI and open text analysis tools have made open-text questions easier to analyze at scale, helping teams quickly surface nuanced themes and uncover meaningful insights into customer sentiment. 

    2. Results are not always actionable 

    You can’t improve what you don’t understand. A low score without additional detail isn’t helpful to your support team. Likewise, a high score might feel great—but without insights, it’s hard to know what you’re doing right or how to replicate it. 

    3. Overused and Misunderstood 

    Some companies lean too hard on NPS, treating it as a cure-all for customer insight. But customer experience is complex and nuance matters. Relying solely on a single number risks oversimplifying what should be a rich, ongoing dialogue with your customers. 

    The Verdict: NPS is a start, but brands need to go beyond 

    So, do NPS surveys still matter? Absolutely. But only when they’re part of a bigger picture and feedback program

    NPS is great at giving you a quick signal. But to truly understand your customers—and build lasting loyalty—you need to go deeper. That means asking smarter follow-up questions, analyzing trends over time, segmenting by persona or journey stage, and taking meaningful action based on what you learn. 

    The best organizations use NPS as the entry point, not the end point, for customer feedback.

    Using Ollama to Run LLMs Locally


    Large Language Models (LLMs) have transformed how we interact with AI, but using them typically requires sending your data to cloud services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. For those concerned with privacy, working in environments with limited internet access, or simply wanting to avoid subscription costs, running LLMs locally is an attractive alternative.

    With tools like Ollama, you can run large language models directly on your own hardware, maintaining full control over your data.

    Getting Started

    To follow along with this tutorial, you’ll need a computer with the following specs:

    • At least 8GB of RAM (16GB or more recommended for larger models)
    • At least 10GB of free disk space
    • (optional, but recommended) A dedicated GPU
    • Windows, macOS, or Linux as your operating system

    The more powerful your hardware, the better your experience will be. A dedicated GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM will allow you to comfortably run most LLMs. If you have the budget, you might even want to consider a high-end GPU like a RTX 4090 or RTX 5090. Don’t fret if you can’t afford any of that though, Ollama will even run on a Raspberry Pi 4!

    What is Ollama?

    Ollama is an open-source, lightweight framework designed to run large language models on your local machine or server. It makes running complex AI models as simple as running a single command, without requiring deep technical knowledge of machine learning infrastructure.

    Here are some key features of Ollama:

    • Simple command-line interface for running models
    • RESTful API for integrating LLMs into your applications
    • Support for models like Llama, Mistral, and Gemma
    • Efficient memory management to run models on consumer hardware
    • Cross-platform support for Windows, macOS, and Linux

    Unlike cloud-based solutions like ChatGPT or Claude, Ollama doesn’t require an internet connection once you’ve downloaded the models. A big benefit of running LLMs locally is no usage quotas or API costs to worry about. This makes it perfect for developers wanting to experiment with LLMs, users concerned about privacy, or anyone wanting to integrate AI capabilities into offline applications.

    Downloading and Installing Ollama

    To get started with Ollama, you’ll need to download and install it on your system.

    First off, visit the official Ollama website at https://ollama.com/download and select your operating system. I’m using Windows, so I’ll be covering that. It’s very straightforward for all operating systems though, so no worries!

    Depending on your OS, you’ll either see a download button or an installation command. If you see the download button, click it to download the installer.

    Once you’ve downloaded Ollama, install it on your system. On Windows, this is done via an installer. Once it opens, click the Install button and Ollama will install automatically.

    Once installed, Ollama will start automatically and create a system tray icon.

    After installation, Ollama runs as a background service and listens on localhost:11434 by default. This is where the API will be accessible for other applications to connect to. You can check if the service is running correctly by opening http://localhost:11434 in your web browser. If you see a response, you’re good to go!

    Your First Chat

    Now that Ollama is installed, it’s time to download an LLM and start a conversation.

    Note: By default, Ollama models are stored on your C-drive on Windows and on your home directory on Linux and macOS. If you want to use a different directory, you can set the OLLAMA_DATA_PATH environment variable to point to the desired location. This is especially useful if you have limited disk space on your drive.
    To do this, use the command setx OLLAMA_DATA_PATH "path/to/your/directory" on Windows or export OLLAMA_DATA_PATH="path/to/your/directory" on Linux and macOS.

    To start a new conversation using Ollama, open a terminal or command prompt and run the following command:

    ollama run gemma3

    This start a new chat session with Gemma3, a powerful and efficient 4B parameter model. When you run this command for the first time, Ollama will download the model, which may take a few minutes depending on your internet connection. You’ll see a progress indicator as the model downloads Once it’s ready you’ll see >>> Send a message in the terminal:

    Try asking a simple question:

    >>> What is the capital of Belgium?

    The model will generate a response that hopefully answers your question. In my case, I got this response:

    The capital of Belgium is **Brussels**.
    
    It's the country's political, economic, and cultural center. 😊
    
    Do you want to know anything more about Brussels?

    You can continue the conversation by adding more questions or statements. To exit the chat, type /bye or press Ctrl+D.

    Congratulations! You’ve just had your first conversation with a locally running LLM.

    Where to Find More Models?

    While Gemma 3 might work well for you, there are many other models available out there. Some models are better for coding for example, while others are better for conversation.

    Official Ollama Models

    The first stop for Ollama models is the official Ollama library.

    The library contains a wide range of models, including chat models, coding models, and more. The models get updated almost daily, so make sure to check back often.
    To download and run any of these models you’re interested in, check the instructions on the model page.

    For example, you might want to try a distilled deepseek-r1 model. To open the model page, click on the model name in the library.

    You’ll now see the different sizes available for this model (1), along with the command to run it (2) and the used parameters (3).

    Depending on your system, you can choose a smaller or a smaller variant with the dropdown on the left. If you have 16GB or more VRAM and want to experiment with a larger model, you can choose the 14B variant. Selecting 14b in the dropdown will change the command next to it as well.

    Choose a size you want to try and copy the command to your clipboard. Next, paste it into a terminal or command prompt to download and run the model. I went with the 8b variant for this example, so I ran the following command:

    ollama run deepseek-r1:8b

    Just like with Gemma 3, you’ll see a progress indicator as the model downloads. Once it’s ready, you’ll see a >>> Send a message prompt in the terminal.

    To test if the model works as expected, ask a question and you should get a response. I asked the same question as before:

    >>> What is the capital of Belgium?

    The response I got was:

    <think>
    
    </think>
    
    The capital of Belgium is Brussels.

    The empty <think> tags in this case are there because deepseek-r1 is a reasoning model, and it didn’t need to do any reasoning to answer this particular question. Feel free to experiment with different models and questions to see what outcomes you get.
