In advance of the conversation, we spoke with Joe to get some insights about his product and his entrepreneurial journey.

What inspired you to create Ollyball?
My 9-year-old daughter was crying in the kitchen after breaking stuff in the house with a volleyball. I knew if we could invent a ball for parents to let their kids play with in the house, we would sell millions of them. It became an obsession through 100 prototypes, two U.S. utility patents and a Toy of the Year award before we ever went to mass market.

How did you test it out?
I made a ton of prototypes with different materials and sizes. I would take the kids to the Kids Club at 24-Hour Fitness and have them bring the prototypes with them. I’d watch to see if the kids were into it or not. When I brought an early version of the now-patented KrunchCor Construction Ball on a Saturday, the kids went bonkers and the manager had to take the ball away because they all fought over it. I knew then we were close to the answer.

Any other big moments that stand out to you about the early days?
When the hosts of the CBS Morning Show started drilling each other with Ollyballs live on national TV. For that moment, they were kids in a playground. Another key moment was an Instagram post from 2019 of a kid named Martin Vodicka and his father in Austria playing Ollyball together in their home. I realized a ball can change the world.

What has been your biggest challenge and how did you pivot to overcome it?
COVID and tariffs. Treated them the same: Go head-first and full-force into crisis and find an unfair competitive advantage. Our pivot was to take a reckless leap of faith. The other big challenge was financial — investing $150k of savings, growing on profits, and fending off predatory investors. The key pivot there was trusting two fellas I met doing non-profit/charitable service, a CPA and a patent attorney.

What advice would you give entrepreneurs looking for funding?
When you want capital, you won’t get it. When you don’t need capital, everyone will offer it — don’t take it. My best advice is to avoid surrendering equity and rejoice in learning every dimension within your business and brand. Get busy building your empire brick by bloody brick.

How do you suggest preparing for a pitch?
Anticipate a room full of a-holes asking a-hole questions. Out-research and have a true answer for every a-hole question. This forces reality.

What does the word “entrepreneur” mean to you?
“Survivor.” The films The Shawshank Redemption and There Will Be Blood illustrate both the apex and the dungeon of entrepreneurism.

What is something many aspiring business owners think they need that they really don’t?
Money. I started my first company on a card table and a metal chair at the end of a hallway that I traded out for work.

What is a book you always recommend?
Here are four:
1. The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. Greatest book on authenticity in business.
2. Henry IV by William Shakespeare. Specifically, Act I sc. II., which relates to understanding your guest/customer.
3. Lean Startup by Eric Ries. I’m living it.
4. Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. Best book on authentic marketing.
5. Anatomy of Yes by Joseph G. Burke. That’s the book I wrote in 46 hours on a train. It was published by Matthew Kelly’s company and the foreword was written by the founder of Domino’s Pizza.
Is there a particular quote or saying that you use as personal motivation?
Yes, I have three of them:
1. “Champions are made in the lonely hours.” A good friend, Kevin Karro, author of Rules of the Red Rubber Ball, handed me this pearl of wisdom.
2. “A team is a group of people who trust each other.” It’s an unavoidable truth.
3. “Put God at the center of everything you do.”

Animations in Kalimba are buttery smooth and fluid, with zero lag on my iPhone 7. There’s also voice acting through the narration, and it’s incredibly well done. A quirky soundtrack plays in the background, which fits in with the overall quirky theme of the game. Overall, Kalimba is beautifully designed inside and out in terms of visual and audio.

Thimbleweed Park is a point-and-click adventure game that’s dark, mysterious, and packed full of humor.

The classic style of point and click adventure games of the past like Secret of Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, and others are on full display in Thimbleweed Park. You get to play as two FBI Agents who are faced with a small town murder to solve. There are numerous quirky characters to interact with as you play through a storyline that is about a dozen hours.

Cat Quest is a fantastic open world RPG dungeon crawler that’s filled with dragons, cats, and epic loot.

Once the premise of the plot is revealed, you’ll embark on a journey of getting strong enough to defeat the dragons. All of your traveling is done on the overworld, as well as combat. Villages and NPCs reveal themselves to you as the story unfolds. Everything is told through quests, whether they’re main quests relating to the story, or side quests that you can do for experience, loot, and rewards.

The biggest draw of Cat Quest is the fact that everything is done in real-time, so there’s no waiting around. As you move around on the overworld, you’ll see enemies scurrying about around you. You can engage in combat with them on the overworld, or just avoid them altogether if they’re too tough.

Space Marshals 2

Space Marshals 2 is the sequel to the original Space Marshals. It’s an immersive tactical combat stealth game where you lay down the law.

The sequel continues the style of the original with a top down shooter adventure that gives you dual stick controls, and a story based adventure to play through. Both editions emphasize tactical combat to allow you to take out enemies from behind with stealth, as well as flank enemies and take cover. The new version seems to have more happening at once, and yet it’s easier to manage all that’s going on. Space Marshals 2 presents relatively expansive mission maps with numerous pockets of enemies. There are also blockades, transitions, and bosses to contend with across the 20 deluxe missions.

Space Marshals 2 is beautiful and packs in a ton of action. You’ll have a hard time putting this one down once you get going.

Ensuring app availability across devices

Avoid unnecessarily declaring required features (like specific cameras or GPS) in your manifest, as this can prevent your app from appearing in the Play Store on devices that lack those specific hardware components but could otherwise run your app perfectly.

Handling different input methods

Remember to handle various input methods like touch, keyboard, and mouse, especially with Chromebook detachables and connected displays.

Prepare for orientation and resizability API changes in Android 16

Beginning in Android 16, for apps targeting SDK 36, manifest and runtime restrictions on orientation, resizability, and aspect ratio will be ignored on displays that are at least 600dp in both dimensions. To meet user expectations, your apps will need layouts that work for both portrait and landscape windows, and support resizing at runtime. There’s a temporary opt-out manifest flag at both the application and activity level to delay these changes until targetSdk 37, and these changes currently do not apply to apps categorized as “Games”. Adaptive considerations for games

Games need to be adaptive too and Unity 6 will add enhanced support for configuration handling, including APIs for screenshots, aspect ratio, and density. Success stories like Asphalt Legends Unite show significant user retention increases on foldables after implementing adaptive features.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge battery life is as bad as you think

When we first picked up the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, we marveled at its delicately thin frame. However, our wonder quickly turned to concern once we saw the phone’s 3,900mAh battery capacity. That’s not tiny, but it’s a pretty conservative cell for a 2025 flagship smartphone, especially one as tall and wide as the Galaxy S25 Plus.

For comparison, the S25 Plus houses a sizable 4,900mAh cell, while even the compact Galaxy S25 nudges ahead of the Edge with 4,000mAh. But it’s also worth noting that the Edge features a larger display with a higher QHD resolution and a more demanding 200MP camera — factors that could all draw more power than those in the regular S25.

Samsung itself claims the Edge should have battery life somewhere between the Galaxy S24 and S25, but our testing has found this to be rather optimistic. Let’s take a look at the results from our automated battery longevity tests, all conducted at a consistent display brightness of 300 nits. For comparison, we also tested both models of the S24, as well as the S25 and S25 Plus.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy S25 Edge underperforms across the board. It clocks fewer minutes than the Galaxy S25 in every test and fares worse than the Galaxy S24 series in most categories — except for our Zoom call test, where it beats the Snapdragon version of the Galaxy S24. It also matches the Exynos model in the 4K recording and Zoom tests. The only consistent result across the board is in camera capture time, where all phones performed similarly. Otherwise, the performance gap is significant and well outside the margin of error. The Edge’s battery life is clearly inferior to its siblings.

In fact, the Edge’s real-world battery life is far worse than the seemingly minor 100mAh difference with the compact Galaxy S25 would suggest. On average, I calculate a roughly 20% reduction in video recording and playback longevity compared to the regular S25, and 27% worse performance in Zoom call duration. Web browsing fared a bit better, with only about an 8% decline, but that’s still worse than the battery size would lead you to expect.

The Edge’s beefier specs drain the 3,900mAh battery even faster than the S25.

Software optimization may play a role, but the Edge’s larger, sharper display undoubtedly draws more power than the regular S25. Combined with the smaller battery, this is a recipe for disappointing screen-on time.

Setting aside the comparisons for a moment, let’s focus on screen-on time itself. Based on our tests, the Galaxy S25 Edge delivers about four and a bit hours of constant content capture, seven to eight hours of moderate use (like web browsing and video calls), and up to 17 hours of offline 4K video playback. These figures aren’t terrible in isolation, but fall an hour or two behind its siblings. And keep in mind that this is under ideal, out-of-the-box conditions. Add background tasks, heavy data use, or gaming, and things quickly deteriorate.

Cutting it fine is an understatement, there’s no headroom for aging battery health here.

Samsung has built the Edge with a battery capacity that clearly cuts it very fine for a full day of use. While the Galaxy S25 Edge might manage modest usage today, consider how it will perform after two or three years, especially at a price point of $1,100. A modest decline to 90% of its original battery capacity after two years could already spell trouble; a drop to 80% will have you reaching for a charger before the day is over.

Additionally, we noticed the thin metal frame heating up frequently during use, which not only accelerates battery degradation but can also cause the battery to discharge inefficiently and increase self-discharge. This might explain why the phone seems to perform particularly poorly in demanding tests, like our Zoom call, and why Samsung has stuck to sluggish 25W charging again.

Either way, it didn’t take a crystal ball to predict battery concerns with the Galaxy S25 Edge, but now we have the data to prove it. If you plan to keep your next phone for a few years, you might want to steer clear of Samsung’s ultra-thin flagship.
